DOOM: The Dark Ages — Combat, Ray Tracing and Edition Choices

Understand the shield-led combat, mandatory ray-tracing hardware and Standard/Premium distinction before buying on PC.

Quick answer

The Dark Ages is a single-player prequel to DOOM (2016) and Eternal, built around a more grounded stand-and-fight approach and the Shield Saw. PC buyers need a hardware-ray-tracing GPU and an NVMe SSD. Decide whether that combat and hardware fit comes first; Premium's extras are a separate choice.

A different combat emphasis, not simply more Eternal

Bethesda presents medieval science-fiction warfare with the Shield Saw, Super Shotgun, an Atlan mech and a dragon. Its stand-and-fight description is the useful starting point for understanding the change in emphasis.

If your main reason to buy is another Eternal-style experience, look specifically at ordinary shield and weapon encounters before deciding. The premise, setting and large machines do not tell you whether you prefer the moment-to-moment fighting. This is a researched overview, not a claim that we have tested that preference.

The PC hardware check comes before the price check

Steam requires hardware ray tracing, including at minimum specification. A graphics card being adequate for an older DOOM is therefore not enough evidence. Both tiers also specify an NVMe SSD.

Check the exact graphics card and storage type, not just installed RAM. The published tiers are requirements rather than our measured frame rates; do not turn them into a guarantee for your resolution and settings.

Published Windows requirements

Compare the complete tier, not memory alone. These are Steam's published requirements, not our performance measurements; another store's activation terms are a separate check.

Base game, Premium Edition or Premium Upgrade?

Steam lists the base game plus campaign DLC, digital artbook/soundtrack and Divinity skins in Premium Edition. A Premium Upgrade is a different purchase from a full Premium Edition: establish that you have the base game before buying an upgrade.

For someone who only wants the main game, compare a base-game listing first. For someone who wants the additional campaign content, inspect the exact Premium package and delivery terms instead of relying on old preorder wording.
